The dream for Brushpoint began over 20 years ago. It started with a simple notion to fix up older homes and save some of the native tallgrass prairie in and around our hometown of Manhattan, Kansas. As we grew, we eventually came to own and operate a full-scale construction division in our pursuit of developing distinctive spaces. Over time, we learned we were creating more than just physical spaces, we were creating spaces that had a unique ability to foster truly enriching experiences. We discovered it wasn’t the mere constructing of those spaces that brought us joy, it was the effect those spaces had on people — elevating perspective, creating connection, and building community. And in that discovery, we found our calling.
In 2019, through a period of intense soul searching, we realized we had a consequential choice to make. We saw that to pursue this calling with absolute conviction, a new Brushpoint would be required — one no longer focused on continual construction and development. What emerged was a vision for a radical approach to spaces, one that measures success not on their inherent physical qualities, but on the transformative experiences people have within them. This is the vision around which we intend to build our lives and our company: to create Space for Life.
Driven by a potent set of values — purpose, stewardship, authenticity, simplicity, connection, and gratitude — we believe that the spaces in which we live, work, rest, and celebrate have a powerful effect on us. We are not immune to our surroundings. Rather, we are intricately connected to them, and people have ever sought to make them more personal, more special, more inspiring. How we design, build, protect, and share those spaces should not be a trivial afterthought. It should be one of life’s greatest joys, and we see ourselves as stewards, committed to creating and operating uncommon spaces that both enrich and inspire.
Brushpoint’s stewardship of these enriching spaces is led by owners Rebecca and Kail Katzenmeier. Natives of Kansas and graduates of Kansas State University, they live amongst the rolling hills of the tallgrass prairie just outside Manhattan. From their early days rehabbing rental properties to the creation of Prairiewood, NorthLight Lodging, Sunset Cottage, and the newly opened Union Hall, their passion is our passion, their journey our story. As our journey continues, we hope you will become a part of that story, and we invite you to experience Space for Life with us.
“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.”
